Massage – Tuina – Acupressure

Massage therapy offers many benefits besides making you feel better.

Massage improves flexibility and provides relief from chronic pain. Your body’s immune system will also appreciate the help, as your massage melts away the stress and boosts your energy to help you get through the day.

Frequently, in cases of musculoskeletal pain, connective tissue adheres together to form trigger points, which surround the muscles as they compensate to help you with repetitive movements or difficult postures. These tissue adhesions, although helpful at first, later result in chronic pain and reduced flexibility.

Techniques like Myofascial Release (MFR) and Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) specifically address these issues and help the body recover faster from chronic pain or injury. Draining the lymphatics by hand improves health far better with superior techniques than those relying on vibrating machines.

Without a detailed understanding of lymphatic flow, unskilled techniques accomplish very little for swelling and edema besides irritating tissue and pushing fluids around.

Effective massage therapy requires expertise.

Compressed fluids trapped in your body become quite painful to endure, and finding relief without the help of a trained expert in soft tissue manipulation might seem impossible to you. You might not even realize the trapped fluids are the cause of your pain!

Your comfort matters, though, so be sure to communicate your experience by sharing feedback with me about where you feel the pain, how long you’ve had it, what makes it better or worse, along with any other details regarding the history of the pain you have been feeling.

Meanwhile, remember to relax your mind and muscles during your massage. Breathe normally and try not to tighten or contract your muscles if possible. If the pressure is too firm, just say so and I will tailor your treatment accordingly.

We want this to be the best massage you’ve ever had.

Gain harmony through tuina.

Chinese Medicine refers to a wide range of modalities and techniques including therapeutic massage and bodywork. Tuina (pronounced “twee-nah”), which means “pinching and pulling”, is the Chinese name for acupressure. It may feel a bit more firm than other techniques, however, tuina remains the most effective method to reduce your muscle tension.

Generally, in a healthy body, Qi (circulating life force) flows through meridians that connect the hands to the head, head to the toes, toes to the torso, and torso to the hands again. So long as this cycle, called the Qi dynamic, continues uninterrupted, the body feels free from pain.

Tuina can address your specific patterns of disharmony as a complement to acupuncture. By pressing my fingers into your flesh instead of needles to stimulate the acupuncture points, many times we can accomplish a similar result.

In many ways, acupuncture is like tuina, except the needles act like additional hands. Manipulating the Qi in the meridians using manual therapy, tuina harmonizes the balance of yin and yang energy in your body to stop pain and improve function.

Acupressure addresses a variety of musculoskeletal problems.

Acupressure continues to excel as one of the most popular treatment modalities offered by Chinese Medicine. This modality best addresses superficial trauma and injury associated with musculoskeletal problems.

Acupressure helps obtain results even when acupuncture may be inappropriate. When working with children, for example, needle insertion may be undesirable, especially when better results may be obtained with more gentle techniques. In this case, we refer to acupressure as “Chinese pediatric massage therapy.”

Self-massage and stretching are also important aspects of self-care that will serve you for years to come. During your sessions, you will have the opportunity to learn what I am doing and how it works. Your health will improve as you learn to incorporate more frequent self-massage in your daily routine. This knowledge helps solidify and expand the benefits created during your treatment.
